So what is this all about, anyway?
If you're familiar with the Crash Town arc in Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds, you're probably good to go. It takes place using the setting and characters and will start out sticking fairly close to canon, with the exception that there is a supernatural force. We can't say there is one in canon, but the presence of one could be inferred with the way some cards seem to become real in Duels. For this game, the force will be very important to play up the creepy aspects and make this a supernatural/mild horror RPG. For the nature of the game, people will be trapped in town when they arrive, as it wouldn't fit the story purposes for them to be able to go get help. ;)
If you're not familiar with the arc, the basic premise is told on the
crash_town Profile page and that should be enough information to start with. More will be revealed in-game. Looking up Kalin Kessler on Google or Bing should probably help too. The Wiki page on him is fairly accurate, although there are some inaccuracies on the Wiki pages for other Crash Town residents.
How do the different Yu-Gi-Oh! verses fit into this? Can characters from other YGO series come play?
I always heard that 5Ds was set 30 years after YGO DM, and I had thought that was official. I have learned lately that it may not be. However, there is some indication that it may be 25 years later, if one assumes DM is a period piece and takes place in 1996 (when the manga was first written). There is a banner in 5Ds that says 2021, and while it isn't definite what that means (at least in the dub), it could be the current year. (Ironic that now we are in that year.)
I have never considered DM a period piece, especially as the manga-ka himself doesn't appear to think so, judging from the tech in The Dark Side of Dimensions. But in any case, we are going to say that in this game, 5Ds is indeed about 25-30 years after DM. The YGO DM characters should still be alive. They could come to Crash Town by driving or walking, if they are the ages they would be in 5Ds. Alternately, they could take part at their YGO DM ages if they come via the dimensional portal, which also connects other time periods in the same dimension. The same holds true for all other YGO series. Yes, all YGO characters and series are welcome here! And, since the dimensional portals are open, multiple versions of characters will be allowed, at least for now. If things get too chaotic, this may change.
Which Yu-Gi-Oh! cards are permissible?
Even though duels will not be played out move for move, there may be occasion to mention some of the characters' cards. Since Radley is referencing a Pendulum Support card for Crystal Beasts in his journal name, and since we really have no idea when the series ZeXal and beyond take place, I'm going to say cards beyond Synchros are acceptable here.
What happens to characters with canonical magical powers?
We don't want anyone to be so overpowered that they could topple the duel gang system, so such powers will be scaled back by the supernatural force, but any powers that wouldn't have any bearing on that will still be allowed in full. If you're not sure if your character's powers should be scaled back, ask!
Is there forced humanization?
No, there is not! Bring us your Sonics, your Darkwings, your McDuck families, even your Aristocats or 101 Dalmatians! They will stay their glorious animal selves. This goes for robots and other non-humans too! The only thing is that animals who can't normally communicate with humans in their verses (i.e., Aristocats, etc.) will be magically granted the ability to speak human talk.
Okay, so what do I do when I join?
Make sure you have joined and subscribed to posts. Then register a character journal here on Dreamwidth. There is an application you can fill out using that journal, but it's not currently mandatory. You can also just check in on that post with the character you'd like to play. Then feel free to wander Crash Town when you're approved! You can make an intro post for your character when they arrive. If you're looking to join one of the Duel Gangs, Malcolm's Crew hangs out at the Red Scarf Saloon and Radley's Bunch is generally found at Radley's Diner. If you'd rather just try to make a peaceful home for yourself and settle back to observe what's going on, you can check out vacant homes or build your own. There is no law enforcement in Crash Town and no mayor either. You are free to do whatever you please. There is also Mrs. Rickshaw's Bed and Breakfast and a small hotel if you're not ready to build a home quite yet.
If you want to join as a character already working in the dyne mines, that is also acceptable, but there may not be as much for your character to do in-game. If you're interested anyway, just choose whether you're working for Malcolm or Radley, as that will be important. Malcolm's Crew tortures their miners, but Radley's Bunch does not.
What about the character journals? How do they work?
For those new to Dreamwidth RPing, character journals are a way to post as the characters. That's pretty much their sole purpose. As a community-based RP, all posts should go here and not in the journals.
Is this plot-based?
Yes, it is! The supernatural/horror elements of the main plot are just getting underway. Players are free to interact with them or focus on the slice-of-life elements. The ultimate goal is to head towards the events of the actual Crash Town arc, do that arc, and then continue the story of Crash Town afterwards, but it may take some time to get there. The journey is the most important thing, not the destination!
What are the posting requirements?
We're looking for prose posts, at least a paragraph each post. You don't have to write an epistle each post (unless that's how you work best, of course)! For comments/replies to posts, they can be long or short. If characters are conversing, one or two lines is reasonable in many cases. Just be sure to give enough to respond to, unless you're ending a thread. We want activity, but we understand real-life gets in the way. There is no activity check. We want things to be fun and stress-free!
Is there a network?
Since the setting is present-day America, no one gets any mysterious devices with new social media apps. However! Everyone is welcome to join Crash Town's online community. Just specify "Network" in the subject line when you post. Text, audio, and video are all permissible for characters to use. Existing cellphones brought into town will connect to the Internet, but it won't be possible to send or receive messages with anyone outside of city limits if said messages contain anything about the state of things in town. Malcolm won't allow it. Anyone who for some reason doesn't own a cellphone or tablet can sign up for a cellphone at the general store. Alternately, those working for Radley or Malcolm will be issued one.
What is this about the Shadow fog?
It wouldn't be YGO without some ooky-spooky supernatural elements, now, would it? Once a month at New Moon, the darkest nights of the month, something sinister comes out. If you so choose, your character can either be waylaid by the mysterious fog while being out too late at night or they can try to help characters who have done so and are suffering the effects of it. The fog seems to make people hallucinate their deepest fears or regrets. Kalin, for example, might be lost in memories of hurting Yusei as a Dark Signer. Yusei might be haunted by Kalin's death.
The fog can also manifest as monsters. These can take any form the player wishes, from Duel Monsters to Halloween creatures like vampires and werewolves. If attacked by a monster, the characters can either end up physically hurt or hurt only in their minds.
Come morning, the fog's victims will be found in the town square. They can react to the night's horrors almost any way the player wishes: with agonized remembering, by not remembering at all, by thinking they have become a monster such as a vampire or werewolf, or even by being in a Shadow coma or dead. We would really prefer to keep the characters alive, however, and only have NPCs die, as even if it's a Shadow death that can be reversed, that wouldn't be likely to happen until the supernatural force is stopped. Do you really want your character out of commission that long?
How are injuries treated?
There is a hospital in town, and the doctor and nurse are kept very busy. Basically, it's present-day America, with all of the medical knowledge we currently have. And maybe a little more, since 5Ds verse is science-fiction!
If my character thinks they're a monster, what should they do?
Pretty much whatever they want depending on what they personally think the monsters are like. If they believe they're a vampire, they may hide from sunlight or try to bite other characters. (No actual biting without player permission!) Werewolves may howl at the moon or act like wild beasts, chasing down anyone they can. Just please remember that this is not a NSFW game. We ideally want to keep it on par with what's shown in the YGO franchise. But that gets pretty dark, honestly, so there is a lot to work with!
